Northern Alberta Sports Car Club (NASCC) has a 2-day Ice Racing weekend at Rob’s lake just west of Edmonton. Marshals always welcome!

Lethbridge Sports Car Club (LSCC) has a Rallycross on Sunday the 29th.

Southern Alberta Solo Club (SASC) is doing a series of Winter and Ice Driving Schools on Ghost Lake, west of Cochrane.

#1 Guess this has to be my favorite as it won a Calgary Tourism photo contest for sporting events!

#2 DirtCup Rallycross at Race City showing lots of gravel flying,

#3 Autoslalom at Deerfoot Mall, Calgary – I like the angle of this shot as well as the closeness of the racing line!

#4 Jet Boat Racing – World Championships in Northern Alberta! The first time I’ve seen jet Boats, 120 mph+ on the river is impressive. One customer bought a HANS device before this event Unfortunately my camera failed in the rain so only got a few shots of the preliminary classes.

A sad but fun weekend at Race City Motorsport Park as the final road racing events took place.  A good turnout in all 3 racing groups.

Stephanie Barns, who races a really cool Triumph TR6 in the Vintage classes’ posted a great description of the final race.

On the last lap of the last race ever, we slowed, got into tight formation, and then raising our own checkered flags, we drove the final lap in salute to Race City, to the volunteers and to the track workers who kept us safe for all those years. As we crossed the finish line for the last time, we stopped, got out of our cars and hugged each other as the champagne, and the tears, flowed. So many wonderful and warm memories are tied up here. It’s so hard to say goodbye.

SENNA is coming to Calgary in July for one night only! Calgary Kart Racing Club (CKRC) is hosting an advance screening of the movie SENNA as part of a fundraising event on Thursday July 21, 2011 at the Globe cinema. The 2011 Sundance Film Festival award winning movie tells the story of the life and career of racing driver Ayrton Senna. Senna is widely considered to be the greatest F1 driver ever.

By attending the event you will get to hear Canada’s own F1 driver Allen Berg talk about his days of racing against, and standing on the podium with, Ayrton Senna. In addition you will be able to enter to win some fantastic prizes including a ride at Race City Speedway in a Dodge Viper ACR, the current production car lap record holder!

Event proceeds are in aid of CKRC. The club is a non-profit organization focused on providing Alberta residents with affordable yet competitive kart racing in the community for both individuals and families to enjoy. You can find out more about CKRC and kart racing at the event. Opportunities will be available to win CKRC Try a Kart certificates so that you can get in the racing seat and try this fun sport!

New Road Course at Castrol Raceway near Edmonton, AB

Good news from Edmonton for all Sports Car racers and High Performance Driving Enthusiasts …. An announcement yesterday that the completion of the road course at Castrol Raceway is going ahead. Once complete it will be a 2.7 km circuit with the first phase planned to be ready for September 2011.

The Road Course will be the newest addition to Castrol Raceway, which also boasts a ¼ Mile IHRA sanctioned Drag Strip, 3/8 Mile clay Oval and a 10 Acre Pro Motocross Track.

A Road Course has been in the works on the Castrol Raceway property since it was first built 20 years ago.  “With the commitment of Wakefield Canada (Castrol’s Canadian parent company) to remain the Title Sponsor and partner of the race track, it seemed like the ideal time to build,” said Rob Reeves.

If all goes according to plan, the Road Course will be fully completed within three years.  Phase one is currently underway and will consist of completing the first 1.4 km loop of track with the hope of being operational by the end of this summer.  Phase two will see the completion of the second 1.3 loop, and phase three will bring it all together.
